Description

Belize was a Maya dominated region in ancient and medieval times. The Spanish claimed it but did not settle there. British settlers arrived in the early 18th century, British administrators set up shop in 1786, Wrangling over slavery ensued for about a century. Mismanagement and neglect promoted the independence movement. Independence was attained in 1981. Guatemala did not renounce its claim to the region until 1984.

The North America category: the big three, the Central American nations, and a bunch of island nations and other political entities in the Caribbean Sea. Greenland we’re putting with Europe. By that criterion we should put Martinique and Aruba with Europe too, but we’re not. I’m not even sure why. Doesn’t matter anyway.
