In Central America several rebellions broke out during the early 19th century, overthrowing the Spanish colonial government. It was generally considered that the political entities of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica were too weak and small to be successful independent nations, and several attempts at federation were made. None were successful.
