Description
In the 13th century certain descendants of Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony, did land trade deals with the Holy Roman Emperor. One of them ended up with the area around the town of Wolfenbüttel. The line remained separate from the Lüneberg-Calenberg branch until the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806
