Hamburg, in northern Germany, is the second largest German city, and is it’s own state in the Federal Republic. It was made an Imperial Free City in 1189 with tax-free access to the North Sea Trade. It grew rich and started a system of offices in other countries that developed into the Hanseatic League of large commercial cities. It participated in the formation of the German Empire as a special case with extra rights.
