Hannover (Hanover) is the capital of the state of Lower Saxony in north central Germany. It was part of the domains of the Dukes of Braunschweig (Brunswick). The Dukes gathered rank through the centuries, and became Imperial Electors in 1692. The electors later became Kings of Great Britain. It became a Kingdom after the Congress of Vienna in 1815. It was annexed by Prussia in 1866.
