Generally speaking, the Nazis played games with money. The main thing they spent money on was preparing for World War II. They couldn’t export enough stuff to pay for those preparations, therefore they had to fleece their citizens.

The Nazis are worth studying for the way they took power. What they did when they got power was, essentially, whatever Hitler wanted, which is perhaps a less interesting aspect of their career. There have been many rulers who liked killing people and destroying infrastructure, and it has never been hard to assemble an army to do that. But the techniques they used to come to power could, theoretically, be used by anyone.

By “Modern World Coins” we mean here, generally, the round, flat, shiny metal objects that people have used for money and still do. “Modern,” though, varies by location. There was some other way they were doing their economies, and then they switched over to “modern coins,” then they went toward paper money, now we’re all going toward digital, a future in which kids look at a coin and say “What’s that?” We’ll say: “We used to use those to buy things.” Kids will ask “How?” The main catalog reference is the Standard Catalog of World Coins, to which the KM numbers refer.
