Description
Apollonia was founded around 600 BC by colonists from Corinth. It became prosperous, and continued its good fortune into Roman times. An earthquake ruined the harbor in the 3rd century AD and was abandoned in the 4th century.
Ancient Illyria was basically modern Croatia and Albania. In early historical times the inhabitants were Illyrians, Celts to the north, Dacians and Thracians to the east, Paeonians and Greeks to the south. Greek trading cities were built along the coast.
We think that our culture grew out of the culture of Greece because it was in Greece (and in China) that people started thinking about how things could be different than they were in a world where everything was dangerous and might made right. They also established principles of artistic expression that we still use today. We see this approach to art in their coins.
