This coin was made by Le Loi to be used as tribute to the Chinese Ming government, which had invaded Vietnam.

The Vietnamese got their ideas about coinage from observing the activities of China. The first Vietnamese coins used a Chinese year title.

All of the neighbor states looked to China for inspiration in the how to do things department. Thus the cast, square hole coins, with appropriate supporting bureaucracy and police, as far afield as Kazakhstan and Indonesia.
