During the period when this coin was made the Katmandu mint was modernizing, making coins with imported machinery, but the coins were still relatively crude.

Virendra (Birendra) was the tenth King of Nepal of the Shah dynasty. He started pit as an absolute God-King but ended up forced by circustances to make a constitution and a multiparty legislature. He was assassinated by his son.
