Quiggin, in “A Survey of Primitive Money,” reported stones were found & gathered into piles under trees into the 19th century. In the 2000s piles of selected stone have been found made by apes, not with holes, but still, there is a long tradition.
Togo is a small country in West Africa. The major port, Lome, was a major depot for the export of slaves for several centuries.
